Entertain the gods

Entertain the gods 画像

For this blog Ill like to recap this week starting from 23rd. We decided to close the cafe early so we can go see the Kagura event in Izanagi temple. I couldn't make it on time to watch from the beginning and missed out on just one performance which was taiko performance by Awaji 369 people. Which sucked but there were more performances so it was chillin. I had no idea what Kagura was until I searched online I just kept thinking it was one of the gods name but Kagura is a traditional form of Japanese music and dance that is closely associated with Shinto rituals. Originating as a means of entertaining the gods, it is performed at shrines and during festivals. The word "kagura" translates to "god entertainment." Seems like there a regional variation of Kagura and on that was able to see 3 different ones. One by ballet group, Izanagi Kagura, and cant remember exactly where but somewhere in Kyushu. Each performance was unique in its own way and the instruments they used were different so it kept bringing new taste we was interesting. Its probably my first time seeing Kagura so I guess unlocked another new experience. Its crazy how many Japanese traditions I experience after moving to Awaji. Hopefully next year Ill be able to move more freely to get better photos of the experience.
Here are some photos...
